My Apprenticeship Experience

I left school with 11 good GCSE's and went on to college to do Accounting, Business Studies and ICT.  After 6 months I realised college was not for me and left to look for a job or an apprenticeship.

Shortly after leaving college I was contacted by Connexions to see what I was doing with myself as I had left college.  They invited me along for a discussion and to see how they could help me.  We discussed various options and they gave me a list of available apprenticeships, so I applied and was given a job at the Weather Shop.

For the first three months at the Weather Shop I was familiarising myself with the products, gaining general weather knowledge and learning the  procedures of the company.  I then gradually integrated into the support and returns of items, which included answering queries by phone and email, and managing the return of faulty items.

I was then offered an apprenticeship covering the Customer Service NVQ at The Weather Shop in April '09.

I started my Level 2 NVQ in Customer Service with Campus Training.  We chose Customer Service because it was the most suited to me and my job role at the time which was mainly dealing with customer problems and queries and as I didn't have any direct experience in this area before we thought it would be the most beneficial.

Skilled apprentice wins award

Brighton apprentice Joe Adams won a prestigious award in 2009 for his dedication to his work-based apprenticeship.

Joe Adams was presented with the ConstructionSkills Award for Best Craft Apprentice in College and at the Workplace in recognition of his hard work and commitment to his carpentry and joinery (site work) apprenticeship. While working for Brighton-based building firm PW Dunk & Co, Joe attended Central Sussex College’s Crawley campus once a week to learn theories and techniques which he then put into practice at work.

The 21-year-old was nominated by his college tutor David Hartsilver who was impressed with Joe’s enthusiasm and his 100% attendance record - which enabled him to achieve both the training and the NVQ elements of the apprenticeship ahead of schedule.

Joe said: “It was a privilege to be given this award. I wouldn’t have been able to do this without the help of Peter Dunk, who has given me such great opportunities and the chance to prove myself. I would also like to say a special thank you to my tutor David, and ConstructionSkills for helping me too.”
