Former EYR Student Success

Joe Haddow, a former Sussex Downs College student, travelled back to Eastbourne to talk to students recently about his career and his work experience.

Joe, who was at the college from 2001 – 2003, studied media, drama, film studies, photography and English. He became interested in radio at the age of 13 when he got involved with hospital radio at DGH by collecting requests on the wards and fundraising at local events.

As Joe said: “By the time I was 14, I was an assistant on a show and then got to present my own show at 15.” Eastbourne Youth Radio played an important role in career choice and focussed his thoughts further as he helped present a show for Park College with a team of fellow contributors.

Joe continued: “I have always loved music and think radio is such a colourful medium. I have listened to radio since I can remember and will always prefer it over television.” After attending Westminster University, where he studied Radio Production, graduating in 2007, Joe worked on numerous programmes for the BBC as well as freelancing at production companies and local stations.

Joe now works as part of the production team for the Chris Evans Breakfast Show. Joe finished his talk by saying: “I would encourage any young person who has a passion for radio to get involved in projects like Eastbourne Youth Radio and hospital radio, as it might just become your life and passion too.”
