Eastbourne Achievers Awards 2010

THE OVERALL Achiever of the Year Award was given to a 14- year-old selfless boy who cares for his mother. Daniel Brown, from Langney, was described by the Achievers judges as a ‘god-send’ to his mother, who suffers from bipolar disorder with other complications. He was not only given the Overall Achiever of the Year Award, but was invited up on stage at the beginning of the evening to collect the award for Outstanding Volunteer or Carer. The Overall Achiever category was sponsored by Sussex Downs College. Hilary Morgan-Jones, head of employability programmes at the college, presented the award to Daniel.

The young man helps his mum with her medication – ensuring she takes it at the right time throughout the day. He also does the shopping, keeps the home clean and ensures she is ready to go to the centre she attends every day. Dedicated Daniel also walks many miles to Eastbourne DGH from Langney. His every waking moment is spent trying to make her life easier and he has said that he wishes he could take all her pain and worries away. The youngster has grown up very quickly and is prepared to give up the normal activities enjoyed by someone of his age. He often forgoes seeing his friends as he doesn’t like to leave his mother alone. Daniel’s love for her is unconditional and he never complains.

Langney Primary School received the Services to Education award by Steven Goss-Turner, chairman of EBP, one of the sponsors of the category.
