Young Chefs 2009
Pupils from Eastbourne Technology College, Cavendish, Ratton, Causeway and St. Bede’s schools will compete at the 2009 Eastbourne Young Chef finals at Sussex Downs College, Cross Levels Way, on Thursday 2nd July.
The competition, now in its fourteenth year, is organised by Eastbourne Education Business Partnership in conjunction with The Grand Hotel. The nine finalists, who will design a 3-course menu, will then have ninety minutes in which to prepare their main dish.
“The variety and quality of entries improves years on year and the judging seems to get more challenging”, comments Keith Mitchell, Executive Chef at The Grand Hotel, who will be supervising the judging.
The other judges will be Ian Miller, representing the Eastbourne Hospitality Association and Kerry Turner, representing the Institute of Hospitality, who have both sponsored the event.
Mentor chefs from the Langham, Chatsworth and Chalk Farm hotels and The Hungry Monk Restaurant have supported the finalists, who have come through their own school heats. This brings additional experience for the students and adds a work-related dimension to the competition.
The two winners from Years 7/8 and 9/10 will both receive a special cup, prizes and lunch at the Grand Hotel. The remaining finalists will each receive a certificate and prizes ‘in recognition of achievement’.
